Today's modern windshield may as well be considered "smart" with all the technology and options that are available, some of those would include:
HEATED WIPERS
This feature is used in colder climates and not every vehicle comes equipped with heated wipers. Not visually obvious on some models, they are activated at specific temperature which heats a area of the windshield where the wipers sit. Not limited to windshields, heat glass can be found on back glasses and vent glasses.
3RD VISOR FRITT
Designed to keep the sun out of your eyes in the top middle of your windshield between your fold down visors you will find these black dots located here, sometimes textured.
CONDENSATION SENSOR
Typically located near the rear view mirror, it detects moisture on the inside of the windshield and automatically adjusts the climate control to reduce condensation .
SHADE BAND
Strip of tinting, often blue, green or gray in color, applied to the top of your windshield.
Like the 3rd visor fritt it blocks the sunlight coming in through that portion of your windshield, preventing glare and protecting your eyes from the sun.
ELECTROCHROMATIC MIRROR
The electric rearview mirror automatically controls the glare from the headlights of the vehicles behind you at night or low light driving conditions. (3) senses the light level around the vehicle, and automatically controls the headlight glare from the vehicles behind you.
When the engine is running, the glare is automatically controlled by the sensor mounted in the rearview mirror.
Whenever the shift lever is shifted into reverse (R), the mirror will automatically go to the brightest setting in order to improve the drivers view behind the vehicle.
LIGHT SENSOR
Similiar in apperance to a rain sensor, the light sensor detect the ambient light, or illuminance, around the vehicle, this system will automatically turn on your lights if it is getting too dark.
To save your vehicle’s battery life, these sensors will also turn off your headlights, too.
HEADS UP DISPLAY
Vehicle’s instrumentation is displayed onto the bottom of the windshield. This allows drivers to check speed, lane departure calls ect without having to take their eyes off of the road.
LANE DEPARTURE WARNING SYSTEM (LDWS) /FORWARD COLLISION
LDWS uses a camera that is mounted to the windshield to keep the vehicle from drifting between lanes. By reading the lines on the road the camera is able to alert the driver or self correct if lane drifting is detected. It is reccomended to recalibrate the camera after installation.
RAIN SENSOR
Detect rain on the windshield and automatically signal the wipers to cycle, they come in a variety of shapes & sizes depending on the make or model.
